The Journey to Optimal Health

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

How do we achieve and sustain optimum health?

One can start by subscribing to any number of health publications that are plentiful. We are definitely not without resources to obtain information about how to achieve a healthy lifestyle. In my opinion, there are five primary areas that need our attention throughout our lives if we will attain optimal health. These are:

1. Proper Nutrition
2. Physical Exercise
3. Proper Sleep
4. Mental Balance
5. Spiritual Balance

Proper Nutrition is a good starting place. Do you eat to live or live to eat? In order to achieve optimal health one needs to stop eating those things that destroy us and start eating those things that nurture our bodies and minds. Fast foods, sugar products, saturated fats, simple carbohydrates, sodas, chips and fried foods should cause a big “skull and cross-bones emblem” picture to flash in our minds. These foods are poison to our bodies. We will never achieve optimum health if we don’t start eating to live. Eating to live means that we eat on purpose, choosing those foods that build us up, that provide long-term benefits.

The human body is designed for activity. The American lifestyle is, for the most part, sedentary. We are not necessarily lazy; we simply have jobs that require limited physical activity, and when we are not on our jobs we are usually caught up in day-to-day activities that also are bereft of physical labor. To undertake and maintain an exercise program requires time and commitment. However, if you truly desire to obtain optimal health it is necessary to get the proper physical activity on a regular basis.

Advice For Regular Exercise

Love-handles stink, no doubt. If anyone actually enjoys having mounds of fat bulge from their sides, I want to meet him/her. The truth is we hate these things. No one knows why they’re called love handles. Someone apparently gave them this name to make people feel better. In reality, anyone who has them, wants to get rid of them, and do it as quickly as possible. Well folks, to accomplish such a feat, you’re going to need a good fat burning exercise.

This is the key to shedding those irksome handles that have nothing to do with love. They have more to do with fast food than anything. Now, are you ready to leave the handles in the dust? Who wants to go work out? Yeah, come on; I want to see everyone raise their hand. Unless you have a body like Christian Bale or Angela Bassett, you should be raising those hands high and starting regular exercise.

These two actors already have a decent fat burning exercise regime, along with a fitness routine and a personal trainer. Hey, don’t hate them! Just get your body in shape too. And as far as the personal trainer goes; if you can afford one, get one. I will pretty much guarantee that they will help you get in shape and stay consistent. Fitness is all about consistency. You can’t just blow it off. If you do, you will soon have those nasty love handles again. The trick is to adopt a good regime and keep it for all eternity.

Probably the best way to drop unwanted ponds is through serious exercise. Not just weight training! Although weights are great and I highly recommend them, you’ll want a fat burning exercise as well. This is where cardio comes into the picture. Think stationary bikes, elliptical machines, treadmills, aerobics classes and swimming. These are all great for burning calories and shedding extra pounds.

You body needs a fat burning exercise on a regular basis to stay healthy. This goes double for those of you who are over the age of 30. Each decade your metabolism really starts to slow down more and more. You should always keep this in mind. Try cyberspace if you’re on the look-out for a few other fat burning exercises.

The real causes of back pain

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

Back pain occurs as a result of something you have done the day before , a week or month ago that have overworked or injured your back muscles in some way and started an imbalance or deterioration that weeks later led to chronic problem you are actually suffering.

Tension will also build up in the muscle as a result of trauma or strain ,overuse and bad posture. This will weaken the muscle thus causing the body to compensate which will eventually get out of balance. This muscle imbalance will cause the pelvis to move to the wrong position. This will affect the spine which will inturn upset the position of the vertebrae and put pressure on the nerves or discs leading to back pain.

The other muscles will become weak as a result or overuse and tightened up as a result of fatigue. This may result to one of the joints in the spine to cause inflammation and pain.

Most causes of back pain is the result of muscle imbalances because these imbalances will cause undue stress or pressure on a certain area which will cause a strain and thus pain.

So establishing the cause of your pain is very important in finding a proper treatment as a wrong diagnosis can send you in the wrong direction wasting a lot of your time and money.

The most common cause of back pain is due to sprains and strains. Sitting and standing for long hours also cause chronic back pain as standing and sitting for long hours will cause fatigue strain and tension.

Accidents causing fractures to the vertebrae is another cause of back pain.

Scoliosis (curvature of the spine) or scheuermann’s disease( a hereditary back disease causing the rounding of the back) .

Spondylolysis which is defective vertebral archers can cause lower back pain or sciatica.

Ankylosing spondylitis is a form of inflammation of the spine and the sacroiliac joints. This is also a rheumatic disease that can affect other tissue of the body.

A short leg is also the underlying cause of back pain. A short leg ,in fact ,cause muscles imbalance and a person who have this problem will have their pelvis drawn down on that side causing tension to build up in the lower back pain and up along the spine to the neck. In such a situation it is impossible for the spine to curve and the vertebrae in the back become twisted or tilted.

Stress, the body worst enemy, will make the intensity and incidence of your pain much greater than it would otherwise be.

Which Trampoline Is Right For You?

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

Are you thinking of buying a trampoline? Good for you! Trampolines are not only fun, but they can provide health and aesthetic benefits as well. There are several different types of trampolines on the market, all of which provide different experiences. Which one is right for you? Here are some options.

Before buying you should carefully consider what the trampoline will be used for and who will be using it. Impulse purchases could land you with a trampoline that isn’t right for you or your family, so make sure to do your research first.

Trampolines vary in many different ways. Size is an obvious characteristic. Some trampolines are big enough to hold several people at once, while others are smaller and can just fit one person. These miniature trampolines are sometimes called trampettes.

Trampolines can also vary in the amount of elasticity they have, which will determine how much bounce they have. Some may have special features to help set them apart from their competition, just make sure to ask your salesperson which features are included in the price of the trampoline.

One popular type of trampoline are rebounder trampolines, which are also known as just rebounders. These are a specialized type of trampoline made for exercise. These trampolines are comparable to other aerobic equipment like treadmills or elliptical trainers in terms of their fitness value. If you are purchasing a treadmill for health-related reasons, a rebounder is definitely something to consider.

Water trampolines are another option for consideration. These trampolines can be used in swimming pools and essentially float in the water. As a note of caution, water safety rules should always be followed, and the water trampoline should never be used in dangerous or open waters. When used safely, these trampolines can be a fun option for your swimming pool.

When buying any trampoline, it is a good idea to look into safety features. There are many different add-ons available to keep your experience as risk free as possible. These include safety nets or cages, and special pads to protect against impact injuries. For the protection they offer you, these are definitely worth the extra investment and worth considering while buying a trampoline.

It’s okay to change your mind after you’ve purchased your trampoline, just make sure you’ve checked out the store’s return policy before you buy! Many stores will let you return merchandise within a certain timeframe after purchase. It’s important to make sure you have the trampoline that is most suitable for you and your family so that you can have many years of enjoyment from it.
