MRSA – Should You Be Concerned?

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

Every day brings news of another case of MRSA at a school. Why the sudden outbreak of this little known disease?

Well, MRSA staph infection is not a new phenomenon. In fact it was first recorded in 1959. It has been a growing problem in our hospitals and nursing homes for several years.

In 2003 MRSA was cited as the leading cause or a contributing cause, and in 2004, it was cited in over three thousand deaths.

Although hospitals and nursing homes are still the riskiest places for MRSA , they are far from the only environments where people are at risk. MRSA staph infection contracted outside of a medical facility is known as CA-MRSA , or community associated MRSA . Currently, about one in eight cases of MRSA infection fall into this category, but the numbers are rising.

Here in America, although the fatality rate of MRSA hasn’t been as high as in Great Britain, and therefore MRSA staph infection hasn’t received as much publicity, it is still widespread and growing rapidly. One report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that in 2000 there were an estimated 125,000 hospitalizations in America that involved a new diagnosis of MRSA infection at some point during their stay.

Schools are of special concern because young children lack fully developed immune systems. Children also have lots of physical contact, share objects, and generally don’t think about hygiene.

Outbreaks of MRSA staph infection are common among high school and Jr. high football teams, as that contact sport creates a lot of cuts, scrapes, and abrasions.

Environments where people come into close physical contact with each other are the riskiest places for contracting MRSA staph infection. The number of MRSA infection cases in California prisons has risen sharply in the past few years.

Areas where physical contact with other people, or with surfaces or materials that an infected person has touched, such as athletic gyms, locker rooms, playgrounds, etc., require extra precautions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has already identified clusters of MRSA staph infection in such places.

News accounts report on of extra cleanings of school surfaces to prevent the spread of MRSA staph infection. Such a “surface” approach is good for PR, but not sufficient as a long term solution.

Tips to cover-up stretch marks

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

Stretch marks can be made less visible by using body makeup matched to the tone of your skin .These make-ups are available in colors for all skin types. When choosing stretch marks cover up ensure that the make-up is a moisturizing one that will help work at fading stretch marks while covering them up. Although some these cover-up products are water-resistant, yet these make ups may not be the best solution if you will be spending a lot of time in the water.

A few people find that sunless tanning treatments such as sprays, over-the-counter lotions and in-salon types of treatments can help cover up stretch marks.

Speaking beach time or pool, the good news is that current fashion favors many styles of bathing suits that also just happen to cover stretch marks. “Boy short” style suits (popular with many athletes because they do not ride up when a person moves) work very well for hiding stretch marks on the upper thighs and buttocks. As many swimmers prefer high-neck bathing suits, these can hide stretch marks in the chest area, there are usually lots of styles to choose from.

Cover stretch marks with surgery – A plastic surgeon or dermatologist can use surgery or certain techniques to reduce the appearance of stretch marks. Surgery such as laser treatments and microdermabrasion, although expensive, can make stretch marks less visible. These techniques are not recommended for teens that are still growing.

Cover Stretch Marks with Tattoo

Light stretch marks that are almost the same shade as your skin will be easy to cover with a tattoo. Pinkish stretch marks that are not deep are not bad to deal with. Dark, deep or purple stretch marks, however, present more of a challenge. The best thing you can do is to go see your tattoo artist and let him/her look at your stretch marks and make an evaluation. Even if your stretch marks are deep or dark, the cover stretch marks artist may have some ideas as to how to work around them or even incorporate them into a cool design.

What Is Natural Weight Loss?

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

Most people associate natural weight loss diets with healthy foods, such as herbs, uncooked fruits and vegetables also known as living foods or unprocessed foods. The truth is that natural weight loss programs are using this kind of food. In this article we will take a closer look at this weight loss method.

Unprocessed Foods

When it comes to natural weight loss, you need to really examine what foods you put in your mouth every day. If you keep a food journal every day, chances are that you will see a trend towards processed, manufactured foods. It is these foods in particular that contribute greatly to weight gain and will likely have additives, preservatives and a variety of dyes. These things are definitely a contributor to natural weight loss so you must toss them off your diet.

When it comes to devising a diet plan, stick with natural foods that do not have to run through a manufacturing plant to be prepared, you don’t need weight loss products. Sure, your milk, natural juices and breads obviously have to be pasteurized or baked in a manufacturing plant but there are no chemicals that really alter the integrity of them. It is the chips, Twinkies, powdered mac and cheese and more that you have to worry about when it comes to a natural weight loss plan.

Uncooked Foods

Some people view that to achieve a natural weight loss victory, you must stick with uncooked foods – how you would find them in nature. The cooking process of vegetables, meats and fruits do tend to break down some enzymes, vitamins and minerals. Eating vegetables raw along with fruits can and will bring you great health benefits with more of a vitamin and mineral boost than canning, freezing or even pickling would provide.

Unfortunately, you really cannot eat meat raw due to the variety of different illnesses that you could contract like salmonella poisoning from uncooked chicken. Therefore, your natural weight loss plan should at least include the leanest of meats as well as seafood.

Herbal Remedies

Natural weight loss brings certain connotations of herbals remedies as well as the sticks and twigs mentality. While there are some effective herbs you can take in a tea or supplement form, they should not be depended on solely for losing weight. However, if you feel that a little boost is necessary in meeting your weight loss goals there are a few herbal based remedies that could help decrease your appetite or reduce absorption of fat like chitosan, hoodia or even chromium. If you see ephedra linked with any natural weight loss herbal remedy, do not take it as it has disastrous side effects.

If there is one particular aspect of a natural weight loss plan that I would emphasize, it must be water. It is very important to drink a considerable amount of water every day for two reasons; one, it removes toxins that build up in your body, two, when you fill yourself up with water, your hunger feeling will be reduced. This is actually something you should do no matter which weight loss program you use. So, drink a glass or two before you eat and when you feel hunger.

Natural weight loss is not just for fitness models, it’s for anyone.

Bipolar Disorder Therapy

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

Bipolar disorder therapy and psychotherapy are being employed more and more as a means to treat bipolar illness in conjunction with medication. Bipolar disease is a complex medical illness of the brain that affects 5.7 million Americans. But the extent to which psychotherapy is effective has been unclear.

Researchers have demonstrated ,for the first time, in separate short-term trials that a single bipolar drug therapy may be effective in treating both the depressive and manic phases of bipolar disorder. Bipolar I and Bipolar II affect approximately 8 million Americans. They have relied on a combination of drugs to manage their symptoms and because of the difficulty in treating such a disorder, the high risk of committing suicide has increased .

An effective bipolar disorder therapy consists of a treatment program that stresses maintaining a regular schedule of daily activities and stability in personal relationships. During the treatment, bipolar therapists help patients understand how changes in daily routines and the quality of their social relationships and their social roles, such as a spouse, parent, or caregiver, for example, can affect their moods. After identifying situations that can trigger depression or mania therapists teach the bipolar disorder patients how to better manage stressful events and better maintain positive relationships.

Patients taking bipolar medications to treat such a disease are more likely to get well faster and stay well if they receive intensive psychotherapy as psychotherapy is considered a stabilizing force in the life of a patient.

It has been found that 64 percent patients in the intensive psychotherapy groups had become well, compared with 52 percent of those in collaborative care therapy. Those in intensive psychotherapy also became well an average of 110 days faster than patients in collaborative care. In addition, it has also been found that patients who received intensive psychotherapy were one and a half times more likely to be clinically well during any month than those who received collaborative care.

Different types of bipolar disorder therapy available
Family-focused therapy require the participation and input of the family members of the patients and focused on enhancing family communication and problem-solving.
Cognitive behavioral therapy are more focused on helping the patient understand distortions in thinking and activity, and learn new ways of coping with the bipolar disease.
Patients will also learn how to cope with bipolar depression by developing such behaviors and thoughts that may help offset the negative mood. They will be able to recognize manic episodes learn how to change behaviors during an episode.
The use bright light therapy for bipolar disorder may aid patients with depressive and bipolar disorders. Bright light therapy also known as phototherapy, has been used to treat seasonal affective disorder since the early 1980s. Many mental health professionals now consider bright light therapy to be standard treatment for seasonal affective disorder.
Interpersonal and social rhythm therapy is focused in helping the patient stabilize his or her daily routines and sleep/wake cycles, and solve key relationship problems.
