Taking part in sports has many perks aside from winning. It puts you in good shape and makes you stronger. It also makes you more disciplined and confident about yourself. Part of engaging in sports, however, is getting hurt. But it doesn’t mean you need to get injured. There are some things which you can do to prevent getting one yourself.
Let’s start with protective wear. Your head is very much susceptible to injury. So it’s important to put on a helmet where wearing it is required. When buying one, see to it that it’s specifically meant for the sport you’re involved in. Different head protective equipment vary in terms of degree of protection given. For example, a ski helmet is not meant for playing football, and vice versa.
Don’t use just about any black helmet you see just because it looks cool. If you are into different sports that require head protection, there are multi-purpose helmets available. This will let you save money as you need not buy a different one for each sport that you play.
Aside from your head, there are other protective wear for other body parts. Some sports will require athletes to wear mouth guards and eyewear. On others, they have to wear protective pads for the elbows, knees, shin, etc. Jock straps and cups are also worn by men involved in football, baseball, wrestling and the likes.
There’s also a reason why warming up before getting into any strenuous activity is important. It increases the temperature of your muscles, lengthens them and makes them more stretchable. Getting into the court or field right away without a proper warm up is definitely a no-no.
Wear a digital sport watch and see to it that you have warmed up properly for 20-30 minutes before playing. Begin by jogging for 5-10 minutes. This will increase your body heat. Then do 10-15 minutes of stretching routines. End the warm up with 10-15 minutes of performing drills, depending on the sport you’re warming up for. Your susceptibility to getting an injury is greatly diminished by warming up.
Now if you incurred an injury, it’s best to take a break. If it’s a serious one, have it checked by a professional. Some athletes can’t wait to get back into sports, even when their recent injury hasn’t completely healed yet. A recovering injury getting re-injured could end up really badly.
