There are almost as many different ways to dance as there are people dancing in the world. Dancing can be modified to fit any mood, any tempo, any beat, or any lyric to any song you can imagine. New dances are being created every day, but the ones that individuals like the most are the one that tend to stick in the general consciousness of the population.

There are many different dance styles that a person may be interested in learning about. Many cities have a number of qualified dance professionals that are happy to give dancing lessons to individuals that are willing to learn and will often have private or group lessons in certain dancing styles available for purchase. There are many different dancing styles to choose from but one thing is guaranteed, whatever the style, you will have fun learning to dance.

Folk Dancing – Folk dancing usually reflects the culture or heritage of the community from where it comes. Bhangra originated in the area of Punjab, India by the farmers of that region. It is exciting and often set to heavy drum beats with a variety of movements by the hands and feet. American square dance is a coordinated style of dance set to country or bluegrass music where groups of four people form squares and move in patterns across the floor. Scottish highland dance is performed by individual dancers and is often performed to bagpipe accompaniment. It is a highly technical dance that represents the unique culture of the Scottish highlands, and has been learned by new generations of students for hundreds of years. Whether you want to learn the dance of you ancestors, or take part in a cultural tradition that you admire, learning to folk dance can be fun and educational.

Ballroom Dancing – Ballroom dancing is generally considered to be the classical style if dancing, born in the Victorian era and used for many formal occasions today. Many individuals choose to learn to ballroom dance so that they can perform the dance for their wedding reception or their anniversary party because the dances are so stylish and involve the man and woman holding each other close for the majority of the dance. There are many different types of ballroom dancing to choose from, including the waltz, the foxtrox, and the tango.

Latin Dance – This refers to the different dances that originate in Latin cultures, including salsa, cha cha cha, and mambo. The movements are sensual and the music is often fast, heavy rhythms with guitar accompaniment. Latin dance classes have become very popular in the past few years, as have Latin music clubs. This is a great way to get some exercise and meet people.

Swing Dance – Swing was made popular in the U.S. and Europe between 1920-1940. The music is jazz–inspired and energetic. Variations of swing dance include the Jitterbug, the Lindy Hop, and the Carolina Shag. Proficient dancers of this style perform wildly acrobatic movements, and the dance is as much fun to watch as it is to do!

Street Dancing – Made popular in urban areas, street dance uses the music of hip-hop, rap and R&B to inspire fluid movements that rely heavily on beats. This type of dance can be performed by a single person, or in a choreographed group for a “drill team” effect.

There are many different dance styles available to choose from and learning any or all of them will let you have fun and feel healthier all at the same time. Choosing a dance to learn is a matter of personal preference along with choosing a dance instructor or dance club to learn the dance from. Dancing lessons can help you feel more at ease with dancing in public and help you get into shape as well.
