About sinus irrigation
Sinus irrigation or nasal irrigation is a natural and practical method for relieving symptoms of hayfever and allergy that has been recommended for decades. A nasal sinus irrigation cleans the passages of your nose where particles get trapped, helping to wash them away Sometimes known as a sinus wash, sinus lavage sinus cleansing or sinus drain ,a sinus irrigation can provide rapid relief from symptoms by washing allergens such as pollen and dust particles out of the nasal passages and sinuses.
In addition, a good sinus irrigation system will help stimulate cilia movement and healthy secretions, keeping the mucosa moist and trapping unwanted particles like dirt, bacteria and allergens.
How Do I Use A Sinus Irrigator ?
Different nasal irrigation products may have slightly different protocols for how best to use them, but here are some general guidelines for how to irrigate. Please ensure that you have read the manufacturers instructions carefully if you have purchased a product designed for irrigation.
You must bend forward over a sink and lower your head and a tilt it a little to the left so your left nostril is pointed down toward the sink. Apply the sinus irrigation tip or bottle snugly against the right nostril. It is not that important to insert anything into your nose. You have to keep your mouth open and breathe through it the entire time. As you begin to irrigate, the sinus drain solution will drain out of the left nostril and should not go down your throat. Stop the nasal irrigation and let any remaining solution drain from your nose. The nest step is to very gently blow your nose to clear out any remaining solution. You must not blow too hard as this could force the solution toward the ear and cause pressure. Now you just have to repeat this process in the other nostril.
A number of different sinus irrigation solutions are commonly used to clear a blocked sinus. There is some debate concerning the most effective of these. The most common are:
Isotonic saline solution – Where Purified water containing a similar salt concentration to body fluids are used
Hypertonic saline solution – “Hyper” refers to something “greater” or “higher” and in this case it means that the solution has a greater salt content than body fluids. Such a system is thought to be better at reducing swelling of the mucous membranes because of this greater salt concentration.
Locke-Ringer, Gleichenberger, and Ems salt solutions – These are Well known solutions with varying concentrations of different salts.
There has been some research undertaken about the best solution to use but it is mostly conflicting. Although some research demonstrates that hypertonic sinus irrigation solutions are more effective than isotonic solutions, other studies show that hypertonic solutions will decrease the movement of the cilia and sinus drainage and these are cells that “sweep” the sinuses and push particles out. From the few research studies about the best sinus irrigation conducted on Locke-Ringer, Gleichenberger, and Ems salt solutions , these have not been shown to decrease the ciliary movement, making them preferable to hypertonic saline solutions.
Considering this, the sensible place to start is by trying nasal irrigation with an isotonic saline solution. For the prevention and relief of symptoms of hayfever and chronic nasal allergies, this procedure can be performed once daily. You must also note that over-irrigation can reduce the ability of the sinuses to fight infection. People with severely compromised immune systems should therefore consult with a doctor about using the sinus irrigation procedure.
