A Young Man Gets Arrested for “Drunk Driving”, Talks to The Human Resources Manager About His Depression, and Becomes Encouraged to Turn His Life Around and Restore His Self Worth

Derek was recognized at work as really conservative individual who had a great work record. He never attended any of the happy hours right after work and it was recognized through the entire office that he was an extremely spiritual person who frequently spoke about the risks regarding alcohol abuse and dependency on alcohol in our country.

Try to imagine the shock within the department when one Monday morning Derek didn’t show up for work and no one had heard from him. Actually, it wasn’t until about 11:00 in the morning that the human resources department received a phone call about Derek from the local city jail.

Derek Has a Talk With His Manager and The Human Resources Manager

When Derek came to work on Tuesday morning, he immediately shared with his superior what had occurred and he asked if he could possibly go and talk to the Human Resources manager about his DUI arrest.

When he got to the HR department and met with the director, he explained that he had not been inebriated since his university days and that he was very embarrassed about his “driving under the influence” arrest. He also articulated the point that he required some assistance finding an experienced and effective “drunk driving” attorney who would represent his DWI case. Stated another way, Derek really wanted the Human Resources director to agree that he needed to see a DUI lawyer.

The Human Resources director told Derek that he needs to schedule an appointment with someone within the company employee’s assistance program to discuss any probable drinking issue that he may have. The HR director also stated that he needs to discuss his need to hire a “driving while intoxicated” attorney to represent him concerning his DUI case.

In addition, the Human Resources manager told Derek that it was encouraging that he hoped to hire a DWI lawyer simply because of the complexities and serious consequences that happen to be affiliated with a “drunk driving” conviction.

The Human Resources director could tell that Derek was apparently disappointed and humiliated by this entire problem. As a consequence, he assured Derek that while he doesn’t believe that conscientious people should ever get behind the steering wheel after consuming alcohol, sadly these situations sometimes take place to pretty good folks.

The Human Resources director then stated that since such a situation cannot be undone, what’s important is what the person does from this point in time forward. As reported by the Human Resources director, “does the individual learn from her or his errors or does she or he develop a pattern of alcohol related complications that cause the man or women long-term suffering and pain”?

Fortunately, Derek Did Not Have a History of Irresponsible and Heavy Drinking

Just before finishing their discussion, the Human Resources manager informed Derek that it was very positive that he doesn’t have a history of abusive and careless drinking drinking. Furthermore, he hasn’t had an alcohol-related predicament since his college days (which was just about 8 years ago). As a consequence, Derek ought to be able to face his “driving under the influence” arrest with remorse but also with some assurance knowing that he will face and process this condition and become a healthier individual down the road.

Derek thanked the Human Resources manager for his practical and encouraging words and then walked over to the company employee’s assistance program to discuss his “driving while intoxicated” arrest, his involvement in abusive and irresponsible drinking over the weekend, and his wish to hire a “drunk driving” lawyer to represent his “driving under the influence” case.

After hearing Derek’s “story,” the physician that was part of the company employee’s assistance program went over Derek’s immediate “game plan” that he needed to address and follow. First, he would be required to take a DUI class to learn more DUI facts and information. Second, he would also be required to take an alcohol abuse class to address his possible drinking problem. Third, he would have to see a psychiatrist, psychologist, therapist, or counselor about his depression.  And finally, it would be an especially pragmatic thing to do if he were to talk with a DUI lawyer about his DWI arrest.

Derek Feels Comfort Knowing That He Will Learn From His Error in Judgment and Turn Out To Be More Dependable

It was apparent that Derek was particularly displeased with the complete DWI scenario, but right after talking to the Human Resources director and to the healthcare practitioner inside the company employee’s assistance program, he felt encouraged that he would in reality learn from his blunder and become even more healthy, much more accountable, and an even more thankful individual.
